Hoffman point machines and Judith Edge 3mm Scale Kits

Andrew Thomas etched wagon chassis.

ETCHED BRASS KITS in 3mm Scale.
Judith Edge kits are designed by Michael Edge, a professional model builder for the last 25 years. All the etched parts are drawn with a CAD system to ensure accuracy. Resin mouldings and some turned parts are provided where appropriate. Wheels, motor, gears and buffers are not supplied.

The kits are etched in material which is thicker than most etched kits. This helps considerably to keep the model straight and true while half etches keep the visible sheet edges to near scale thickness. Half etched overlays are kept to a minimum on most of the kits and unsupported flat half etched parts are avoided.

A feature of the kit design is that the body is built in two sections, usually the engine casing/cab and the footplate/frame, joined with 14BA screws. This helps in construction and also makes painting easier. In all but the first three kits the cab floor is fitted to the frames, which leaves the cab interior accessible for painting and glazing after assembly while allowing the roof to be soldered on.
The instructions are designed as far as possible to explain how to build each model, rather than simply showing which part fits where. The etched parts are identified by number and a descriptive list. All the parts are shown on a general arrangement drawing which is derived from the CAD drawing used to create the kit and printed exactly to scale.

North British/Paxman 0-4-0DH                                                                                                £38

This kit builds the first three BR locos, 11700-2 (D2700-2) or the original industrial loco which were built from the early 50s. The three BR locos were built in 1953 and lasted until about 1967.

This kit also builds the  later version of D2700-2, i.e. D2703-7.  This type was only built for BR and all were scrapped 1967/8.

Barclay 204hp 0-6-0DM                                                                                                               £38

These ten locos were built in 1956/7 for BR Eastern region (classified DJ/14) and were originally numbered 11177-86, later D2400-2409. They were based on Barclay's existing industrial shunter design and used the ubiquitous Gardner 8L3 engine with a four speed gearbox. They spent most of their lives in Lincolnshire and were scrapped in 1969/70.

Hunslet 67T 403hp 0-6-0DH                                                                                                      £38

These locomotives were built between 1971 and 1978 for hauling ingot cars at British Steel's Templeborough works. The specification was for a loco no larger than the existing Fowler 0-4-0 diesel electrics but with twice the tractive effort, and still able to go round 90' reverse curves. The end result was a loco with 6" thick frames and 8" thick buffer beams - even the footplate is 3" thick. This massive frame, weighing 27 tons on its own, presents some problems in a model - most of our materials are far too thin for once.  Only seven were built, all with the special drawgear and centre buffers for the ingot cars. More recently three have gone to Rover at Longbridge for more general shunting duties.

The Ruston 165DS                                                                                                                         £38

The Ruston 165DS was introduced as a standard design in 1946 and 124 were built in several varieties. The 0-4-0DM standard gauge version had 3'3" wheels, a Ruston 165hp engine and weighed 29 tons. This kit is intended to build one of the two locos bought by British Railways in 1956 but it can easily be adapted to build the very similar industrial version. The two BR locos were numbered 11507/8, later D2957/8.

Sentinel 325hp 0-6-0DH                                                                                                            £38

These locos were produced in considerable numbers over many years by Sentinel, then Rolls Royce later by Thomas Hill and most recently by RFS. Many are still in use in a wide variety of industrial locations.

LMS/BR Jackshaft drive 0-6-0DE                                                                                            £38

This kit will build LMS 7110-19 or BR 12023-32 and represents the final batch of ten single motor 350hp 0-6-0 diesel electric shunters built by the LMS at Derby in 1942.  LMS 7100-9 were built to the same design but went to the War Department with WD Nos (initially WD49-58 but they changed) for service overseas, in the Middle East, Egypt and eventually Italy FS700.001-4 where some still are.   The locos were originally painted black and all passed to British Railways in 1948.  A few were painted BR green with yellow/black stripes in the 1960s and the last were withdrawn in 1967.  Variations within this batch are covered in the kit but the earlier locos (7080 - 99/12003 - 12022) differ in detail and main dimensions, so cannot be produced without considerable modifications.
